Applying for Veterinary Nurse Courses
These are widely available at further and higher education colleges. You can follow the Veterinary Nursing Training Scheme. This is laid out by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and is for those who wish to work with small animals within a veterinary practice.
The Scheme is for those either within higher education on a relevant course or those who are working within a RCVS approved practice. You will undertake clinical training and attend college on a day or block-release basis. At the end of the training you can take the RCVS examinations which lead to NVQ/SVQ awards. If you wish to specialise in equine nursing you will need to employed in a specialist equine practice.
Apart from the RCVS scheme there are also HNDs in veterinary nursing which may help you get a training placement or some have a placement included as part of the course.
To practice as a veterinary nurse however, you do need to be registered with the RCVS. A list of accredited course providers is available from the RCVS website.
