Quick Guide – Carmel 6th Form

Quick Guide

Higher education means studying for qualifications such as first degrees, higher national diplomas or foundation degrees.  Courses usually take place in universities but increasingly many more are taught at colleges of higher education, specialist art institutions and agricultural colleges.  There is a huge choice of institute as well as variety of courses available.

Good reasons to choose HE

Students continue to develop important transferable skills.  Employers are looking for young graduates with a good knowledge base, sound communication skills, the ability to work with others, analyse problems and be independent thinkers.

In terms of getting a future job, a degree can lead to increased earning potential, greater opportunities and a more rewarding career.  Most experts would agree that the financial benefits usually far outweigh any costs that are incurred in completing a higher education course and many employers actively target graduates in their recruitment campaigns.

A degree is essential for some careers such as medicine, dentistry, chartered engineering and architecture while some professions such as law or speech therapy require additional postgraduate qualifications before a new entrant is able to practice.

Students can choose a course depending on their preference and can continue and evolve courses as they progress through university.
