Exploring Service, Advocacy and Community Support

A Year 12 student from Carmel College Sixth Form in Darlington has enjoyed an inspiring week of work experience, gaining a unique insight into the power of community support, advocacy and public service.

Szymon had the fantastic opportunity to work alongside Cyndi Hughes DL, former Mayor of Darlington, former Chair of Governors at Carmel and former Chair of Directors of Carmel Education Trust.

Visiting Organisations Across Darlington

Throughout the week, Szymon visited and worked with a wide range of organisations that provide essential services and support across the local community.

These included Darlington Connect, First Stop, Darlington Community Grocery, The Edge Centre, Teesside Justice Centre, Darlington Borough Council, King's Church Foodbank, The Bread & Butter Thing at The Well, Christians Against Poverty, Learning & Skills Darlington and St Columba's Foodbank.

The experience provided valuable insight into the work being carried out by local organisations to support individuals and families across the region.

An Inspiring Week of Learning

By meeting professionals and volunteers from a variety of sectors, Szymon developed a deeper understanding of partnership working, community outreach and the importance of helping others.

The placement highlighted the impact that advocacy, cooperation and service can have in improving lives and strengthening communities.

Thank You to Everyone Involved

A huge thank you goes to Cyndi Hughes and to everyone who welcomed, encouraged and inspired Szymon throughout the week.

This was a wonderful example of how work experience can open eyes, hearts and minds while helping young people develop a greater understanding of the world around them.
